John driving the tug pushing a full hopper into Icknield Port Loop from the BCN Main Line Canal. The winch wires were not attached for this work as they made it very difficult to get round this corner, so the hopper was “stemmed”, that is pushed with only a short rope joining the two boats, an operation very similar to reversing an articulated lorry. This dredging was flagged up as “Project Aquarius”, and involved removing all the silt from three miles of canal between Five Ways Bridge on the Worcester & Birmingham Canal, and Soho Junction on the BCN Main Line, together with dredging the Oozells Street Loop and the Icknield Port Loop. This was probably the best dredging ever undertaken as ALL the silt was removed and taken away to tips.
