Jules Fuels pair leave Awbridge

Southern Cross and Bideford left Awbridge on the 13th May loaded with coal, and bound for Stoke Bruerne. They whizzed up the Wolverhampton Twenty-one using a long line - a technique that neither Ryan (erstwhile captain of Southern Cross) nor Jules had ever used before. Once heads had been got around the procedure, a seemless ascent of the locks was demonstrated!

The lower picture shows Ryan sorting out the rope at the top of the locks. There is an old song entitled “Forty Miles of Bad Rope” or something which sprang to mind.
